According to market research firm Yole Developpement, the demand for a variety of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) and image sensors in the UAV and robot market will usher in an explosion during the next five years. The market value of UAVs and robotic sensors in 2015 was US$350 million, and it is expected to double by 2021 and reach US$709 million at a compound annual growth rate of 12.4%. Key technologies will include 3D cameras, solid-state lidars, and precision gyroscopes with full navigation and anti-collision capabilities. The biggest demand for drones and robots is the defense and industrial markets, which are mainly attributed to the global policies of the United States and China. "Through our research, we discovered that at least ten new applications for UAVs and robots will generate more than one billion U.S. dollars in revenue each year," Yole analyst Pierre Cambou said. These applications include consumer drones, self-driving vehicles, Service robots, etc., will all reduce the proportion of defense and industrial markets. According to Yole, these new equipment markets will see a compound annual growth rate of over 40%.
