Downloads Page for the Box Frame Roller Gate
The Fortress Box Frame Roller Gate, manufactured by TYMETAL, represents a significant advancement in the design, construction, and performance of large roller gates through the use of an innovative wheel system. This design can protect openings up to 500 feet wide. When operating under normal load, the wheels run on a W4 x 13 "I" beam track, making contact with the top and side surfaces of a steel beam. As wind exerts lateral pressure on the gate, the width of the wheel system and its low center of gravity help keep the gate stable. However, when wind loads become strong enough to lift the wheels off the beam, safety guides engage with the underside of the track's flange, ensuring the gate remains securely anchored to the ground.
Box Frame Roller Gates are constructed from 6063-T6 aluminum alloy extrusions. The main structural components (top and bottom) have a "P" shaped cross-section. Vertical members alternate between 1†x 2†and 1†x 1†in cross-section and are spaced at intervals not exceeding the overall height of the box frame. The gate is built in a "box" configuration, with a width between frames measuring 24†from outside to outside.
Roller wheel trolley assemblies are bolted to the box frame at pre-determined intervals. Each assembly includes several steel components welded together to provide support for the axle. The gate operates on two parallel tracks embedded in concrete, with the top of the track level with the ground surface.

**TYM-HYD Box Frame Roller Gate System with Hydraulic Operator (Chain Link)**
**Part 1 – General:**
**1.01 Section Includes:**
The work in this section shall include furnishing all labor, materials, equipment, and appliances necessary to complete all Fortress Box Frame Roller Gates and Hydraulic Operator Systems required for this project in strict accordance with this specification section and drawings.
**1.02 References:**
A. Underwriters Laboratory Gate Operator Requirements (UL 325).
Operators must be built to UL 325 standards and listed by a testing laboratory. Electrical work should follow local codes and the National Electrical Code. All fieldwork must be performed neatly and professionally, meeting journeyman standards.
Current safety standards require multiple external sensors capable of reversing the gate in either direction upon sensing an obstruction.
Pedestrians should never use vehicle gates; separate pedestrian gates must always be provided when foot traffic is present.
Hydraulic Operator Model TYM-HYD-VF2 is compliant with usage Classes III and IV.
B. ASTM F 2200 – Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction.
C. American Welding Society AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code.
D. ASTM A 123 Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel.
**1.03 Submittals:**
A. Product Data: Provide manufacturer’s catalog cuts with printed specifications and installation instructions. Deliver two copies of operation and maintenance data, including the name, address, and telephone number of the nearest service center. Each operator must bear a label indicating it has been tested for full power, pressure, stress, and electrical overload devices.
B. Shop Drawings: Supply shop drawings showing the relationship of operating systems with gate components, including details of all major components. Include complete details of gate construction, gate height, and post spacing dimensions.
C. Certifications: Aluminum welders and welding processes must be certified per section 2.04 D. Operator Manufacturer must specialize in hydraulic gate operators with a minimum of ten years of experience. Installer must have a minimum of three years of experience installing similar equipment.
**Part 2 – Products:**
**2.01 Hydraulic Gate Operators:**
An Hydraulic Gate Operator TYM-HYD-VF2 with controller supplied by TYMETAL, 2549 State Route 40, Greenwich, NY 12834 – (800)-328-4283.
**2.02 Operation:**
Operation is via a metal rail passing between solid metal wheels with polyurethane treads. Operator motors are hydraulic, and the system does not include belts, gears, pulleys, roller chains, or sprockets. The operator generates a minimum horizontal pull of 300 pounds without drive wheel slippage or distortion of supporting arms. It can handle gates weighing up to 5,000 pounds. Speed is controlled by an electronic Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), which gradually accelerates and decelerates the gate to prevent shock loads. Maximum gate velocity is not less than 26 inches per second. Two adjustable hydraulic brake valves assist in slowing the gate to a precise stop.
**2.03 Factory Testing:**
Each gate operator is fully assembled and tested at the factory to ensure smooth operation, proper sequencing, and electrical connection integrity. Physical loads simulate field conditions, and tests replicate the fully rated capacity of the operator components. Mechanical connections are checked for tightness and alignment, and all welds are inspected for completeness and continuity.
**2.04 Box Frame Roller Gates:**
TYMETAL, 2549 State Route 40, Greenwich, NY 12834 – (800) 328-4283, will manufacture the Box Frame Roller Gate(s). Approved substitutions must be submitted to the design team for approval before the bid date.
**2.05 Gate Construction Details:**
Gate frames are made from 6063-T6 aluminum alloy extrusions. Primary members (top and bottom) are “P†shaped in cross-section. Vertical members alternate between 1â€x2†and 1â€x1†in cross-section. The gate is constructed in a “box†form with a width of 24†between frames. Safety guides and diagonal bracing are included for stability and vertical adjustment.
**Part 3 – Execution:**
**3.01 Site Inspection:**
Final grades and installation conditions must be examined. Installation cannot begin until all unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. Locate the concrete mounting pad according to approved shop drawings. Ensure the gate is level and operates smoothly manually before installing the operator.
**3.02 Installation:**
Equipment must be installed in strict accordance with the company’s printed instructions unless otherwise shown on the contract drawings. The gate and installation must conform to ASTM F 2200 and UL 325 standards. The electric service to the operator must be at least 20 AMPS.
**3.03 System Validation:**
The complete system must be adjusted to ensure proper performance. Test the gate operator through a minimum of ten full cycles and adjust to ensure smooth operation. Test limit switches for proper “at rest†gate position. All anchor bolts must be concealed in the finished installation. For operated gate systems, test and explain safety features, including warning signs and user training.
Note: TYMETAL reserves the right to modify and/or make changes as deemed necessary without previous notice.
