Libertyville Box Alarm 1-19-11

The Libertyville Fire Department, serving Lake County, responded to a house fire at 516 Wrightwood Terrace just after 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The incident was initially reported by an off-duty firefighter who noticed flames coming from the unoccupied home. Upon arrival, Libertyville crews encountered heavy fire originating from the rear of the structure and quickly called for mutual aid. As the fire vented through the roof and spread across the entire back porch, firefighters transitioned to a defensive position. Libertyville Quint 462 and Engine 461 were stationed in the 'A' Sector, directly in front of the house. Both units were equipped with Wil-Burt telescoping light towers, which provided excellent visibility and safety for crews working in snowy and icy conditions. The 75-foot aerial ladder was extended over the building, with floodlights at the tip offering additional illumination. The Metropolitan Emergency Support Services (MESS) was also on scene, operating a canteen and a warming bus to support the firefighters. The fire was brought under control within about an hour, but the house was completely gutted and required extensive overhaul. Despite arriving after most of the firefighting had concluded, Larry Shapiro captured several compelling images of the scene. A full gallery is available here. One photo shows the house still emitting light smoke and steam after the fire was knocked down, highlighting the intensity of the blaze. Another image features Libertyville Quint 462, a 2008 Pierce Velocity 75' quint, equipped with a mid-ship mounted Wil-Burt light tower—ideal for night operations when the unit is positioned close to the structure. The MESS canteen was set up near the rehab ambulance, providing hot food and drinks to the responding crews. Behind it stood the MESS warming bus, offering a place for firefighters to rest and stay warm. Another shot captures both Quint 462 and Engine 461 with their light towers deployed, illuminating the scene effectively. The American flag graphic on the grille of Quint 462 adds a striking visual element. Lastly, a photo of Engine 461, built on a Dash chassis, shows how the pump panel and other equipment are housed behind roll-up doors. Libertyville’s fleet includes a variety of Pierce apparatus, such as the Dash, Velocity, and Quantum chassis models. These images give a detailed look at the response and the equipment used during the incident.
