Buffalo Grove haz mat 8-5-11
A resident lost control of her car and crashed through the garage door on Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove on Friday. The incident occurred around 1 p.m., when a 9-1-1 call was received about a vehicle that had entered a house at 646 Bernard Drive. Upon arrival, police found a split-level home with a sloped driveway leading to a garage below street level. The driver, who was not trapped, had knocked over a chemical container that spilled onto the floor and mixed with fertilizer, causing a dangerous reaction.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found several officers and the driver exposed to harmful vapors. One officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution, while others signed medical releases on-site. The area was immediately sealed off, and hazmat technicians were called in to assess and neutralize the spill. Due to the situation, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department requested mutual aid to ensure coverage for the rest of the town.
Hazmat teams carefully entered the garage, taking all necessary precautions before beginning the cleanup. Duct tape was used to seal the sleeves of their protective gear, and a backup hose line was stationed outside in case of emergencies. Inside, technicians cleared the damaged garage door to allow more light and air circulation. After the hazardous materials were properly contained, the team exited the "hot zone" and underwent a thorough decontamination process.
Larry Shapiro captured several images of the incident, including the moment the car broke through the garage door, the exposure of personnel to fumes, and the hazmat team at work. His full gallery can be viewed [here](#). For more details, check out the [Daily Herald article](#).
