Autodesk Previews Urban Canvas at American Planning Association Conference
Autodesk is set to revolutionize the regional and local planning market with a new, purpose-built solution tailored for planning professionals. At the 2015 American Planning Association National Conference in Seattle, Autodesk made a strong presence by showcasing its latest tool, Autodesk Urban Canvas, in a collaborative "Tech Zone" co-hosted with Parsons Brinckerhoff.
Today, Autodesk announced the launch of Urban Canvas, a groundbreaking platform designed to help planners design, analyze, and collaborate more effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Built on the acquired Synthicity technology, this software offers a unified solution that streamlines urban planning workflows, which were previously fragmented across multiple tools. From editing and sharing data on parcels, buildings, and zoning to rapidly designing and communicating development scenarios, Urban Canvas provides a dynamic environment that simplifies complex tasks.
The release of Urban Canvas follows Autodesk's recent acquisition of Synthicity, a California-based software company, though the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. Today’s urban planners often rely on a mix of GIS software, databases, spreadsheets, and design tools to gather and analyze data. With Urban Canvas, Autodesk is offering a centralized platform that integrates these functions into one cohesive system, making planning more efficient and accessible.
Paul Waddell, Professor and Chair of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley and an Autodesk consultant, emphasized the importance of planning in shaping livable, inclusive, and sustainable cities. Scott Noble, Industry Strategy Manager at Autodesk, highlighted how Urban Canvas, along with improvements in InfraWorks 360 and collaboration with Impact Infrastructure, reflects Autodesk’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through innovative design.
Urban Canvas allows planning professionals to:
- Collaborate and share built-environment data in the cloud
- Develop and evaluate different planning scenarios and project phases
- Track development projects in real time
- Quickly generate 3D models of proposed developments and their surrounding areas
- Visualize and analyze planning alternatives in a comprehensive way
The platform also includes features that enable users to analyze proposals as they design, visualize in context, view data in 3D across geographic scales, and communicate key information effectively at the right time.
Autodesk Urban Canvas is now available in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. as a Desktop Subscription, either annual or quarterly. For more details, pricing, and product information, contact Urban.Canvas via email.
