Despite its impressive specs, the RAV4 EV faced several hurdles. Charging times were slow without a Level 2 charger, making it impractical for everyday use. Plus, it was only available in California, limiting its reach. By 2014, only around 2,500 units had been sold. After the partnership with Tesla ended, Toyota decided to pull the plug, focusing instead on developing its own EV technologies. Fast forward to today, and Toyota is once again making waves with the RAV4 Prime, a hybrid version of the SUV that offers 302 horsepower and is available in the U.S. However, the X Prologue represents a new chapter in Toyota’s EV journey, one that could signal a shift toward more affordable and accessible electric options. While the RAV4 EV may have been overlooked in its time, its legacy lives on.
