Robbins 2nd Alarm fire 4-1-12 (part 2)
I just witnessed something absolutely incredible unfold right here in Robbins, Illinois. It all started when a massive tire fire erupted earlier today, and it quickly became clear this wasn't going to be your average emergency response situation. The flames were so intense they seemed to leap high into the air, creating this eerie orange glow against the sky. It was like watching a scene straight out of a disaster movie.
The fire department arrived fast, but getting close enough to even begin fighting it proved to be a real challenge. There were so many burning tires packed tightly together, almost forming a wall of fire. Plus, there were vehicles scattered around the area, which made access even more difficult. A front-end loader had to be brought in just to create some sort of pathway for the firefighters to reach the heart of the blaze.
One of the first things I noticed was how coordinated everyone was despite the chaos. Different departments were working side by side—Robbins, Blue Island, Merrionette Park, Garden Homes Fire Protection District, Frankfort, Northwest Homer FPD, Posen, Crestwood, Midlothian, Flossmoor, Phoenix, Dixmoor, Hazel Crest, and Oak Forest. Each team brought their own expertise and equipment, from standard fire engines to aerial ladders reaching across creeks that ran along parts of the fire.
Speaking of the creek, that added another layer of complexity. Some of the fire was actually on the other side of it, requiring special tactics. The Robbins tower ladder did an amazing job of spraying water across the waterway to douse those flames. Meanwhile, crews closer to the main fire focused on deploying foam lines to tackle the intense heat emanating from the burning rubber.
As the hours passed, you could see the determination in every firefighter's face. They worked tirelessly for about three hours before finally bringing the inferno under control. Watching them in action was humbling; these guys didn’t hesitate for a second, even though the conditions were brutal. Their teamwork and professionalism shone through, especially considering the scale of the disaster they faced.
In the aftermath, there’s still cleanup ahead, but for now, the immediate danger has passed. This whole event really highlighted not only the dangers of tire fires but also the incredible resilience and collaboration of local fire departments.
