Flyability launches the Elios 3, an indoor LiDAR drone for Industry 4.0

May 19, 2022—Flyability has officially introduced the Elios 3, the world’s first collision-tolerant drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor for indoor 3D mapping. This groundbreaking device is powered by a new SLAM engine called FlyAware™, which enables real-time 3D modeling during flight, paired with the latest version of Flyability's inspection software, Inspector 4.0.

Since its launch in 2016, Flyability has been at the forefront of confined space inspection technology. With the release of the Elios 3, the company continues to push the boundaries of innovation, ensuring that dangerous tasks are handled by machines rather than humans, making industrial inspections safer and more efficient.

The Elios 3 was developed to meet the growing demand for reliable and accurate inspection tools. As industries increasingly rely on drones for complex tasks, they need systems that are intuitive, consistent, and stable, especially when operating in sensitive or hazardous environments.

"The Elios 3 sets a new standard in stabilization, offers a modular design, and allows for real-time 3D model creation while flying," said Patrick Thévoz, co-founder and CEO of Flyability. "It's a major step forward in the journey toward full autonomy and plays a crucial role in advancing Industry 4.0 by making inspections faster, safer, and more cost-effective."

The Elios 3 features an Ouster OS0-32 LiDAR sensor, enabling high-precision data collection for detailed 3D models. These models can be created using GeoSLAM's software, a new partner of Flyability. This collaboration allows professionals to map hard-to-reach or dangerous areas with accuracy, eliminating guesswork and improving decision-making across multiple industries.

With the ability to carry a second payload, the Elios 3 is highly customizable, adapting to the unique needs of each user. Its FlyAwareâ„¢ SLAM engine ensures real-time 3D modeling and unmatched stability by combining data from three optical cameras and the LiDAR sensor to detect and compensate for even the smallest movements.

Inspector 4.0, the new software tool, allows inspectors to visualize points of interest on a high-resolution 3D map. This feature gives stakeholders a clear digital view of their assets, making it easier to identify and address issues during maintenance and planning phases.

"The Elios 3 is the most ambitious project we've ever worked on," said Adrien Briod, CTO of Flyability. "If the Elios 2 was like a basic flip phone, the Elios 3 is a smartphone—fully customizable, adaptable, and built to grow with future innovations."

After four years of development, Flyability's engineers conducted over 200 field missions to refine the technology and ensure reliability. The company also partnered with leading universities and joined Team Cerberus, winning DARPA’s Sub-T challenge for autonomous robotics in underground environments.
