Flyability launches the Elios 3, an indoor LiDAR drone for Industry 4.0

May 19, 2022 — Flyability has officially introduced the Elios 3, a groundbreaking drone that marks a new era in indoor inspection technology. As the world’s first collision-tolerant drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor, the Elios 3 is designed to create detailed 3D maps of confined and hazardous spaces. This innovation is powered by FlyAware™, a revolutionary SLAM engine that enables real-time 3D modeling during flight, paired with the latest version of Flyability's inspection software, Inspector 4.0.

Since its inception in 2016, Flyability has been at the forefront of developing drones for confined space inspections. The launch of the Elios 3 continues this mission by delivering cutting-edge tools that keep human workers out of dangerous environments and instead empower them with advanced robotic solutions. With industries increasingly relying on drones for critical tasks, the need for reliable, consistent, and stable technology has never been more important.

The Elios 3 was developed with the specific goal of meeting the growing demand for dependable inspection tools. It offers unmatched stability, a modular design, and the ability to generate high-accuracy 3D models in real time. These features make it an essential tool for industrial inspections, supporting safer, faster, and more cost-effective operations across multiple sectors.

"The Elios 3 represents a major leap forward in drone technology," said Patrick Thévoz, co-founder and CEO of Flyability. "It combines powerful stabilization, real-time 3D mapping, and a flexible payload system, making it a key enabler of Industry 4.0. For professionals in the field, this means safer, more efficient, and more accurate inspections than ever before."

Equipped with an Ouster OS0-32 LiDAR sensor, the Elios 3 allows inspectors to collect precise data for creating survey-grade 3D models. This data is processed using GeoSLAM's software, enabling teams to map areas that are otherwise inaccessible or too risky for humans. The drone can also support a second payload, offering users the flexibility to customize their setup based on specific needs.

At the heart of the Elios 3 is Flyaware™, Flyability’s proprietary SLAM engine. This system processes LiDAR data in real time, generating accurate 3D models while the drone is in motion. Additionally, Flyaware™ enhances the drone’s stability by integrating data from three optical cameras and the LiDAR sensor, allowing it to detect and compensate for even the smallest movements. This level of precision makes the Elios 3 incredibly user-friendly, so new pilots can be trained and start conducting inspections within a single day.

With Inspector 4.0, users can now visualize Points of Interest (POIs) directly on a high-resolution 3D map. This feature allows stakeholders to navigate through digital representations of their assets, making it easier to identify and address issues during maintenance and planning phases.

"The Elios 3 is the most ambitious project we've ever taken on," said Adrien Briod, CTO of Flyability. "If the Elios 2 was like a basic phone, the Elios 3 is a smartphone — fully customizable, adaptable, and built to evolve with future innovations."

Flyability spent four years developing the Elios 3, investing thousands of hours in R&D and conducting over 200 field missions to refine the technology. The company also partnered with top universities, including joining Team Cerberus in DARPA’s Sub-T challenge, which focused on autonomous robotics in underground environments.
