Has COVID-19 Changed The Way We Think About Our Drinking Water?
According to the results of its third annual Water Quality Survey, Aquasana has discovered that many Americans are now more conscious about their drinking water due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of National Water Quality Month in August, the company conducted a study to understand how the global health crisis has shifted public perception on tap water. The findings reveal some intriguing insights into how the pandemic has influenced concerns around water quality across the United States.
Today, Office H2O will be diving into the key takeaways from this survey. We'll explore what these findings mean for your daily water consumption and how you can ensure your drinking water is as safe and clean as possible moving forward.
**Drinking-Water Quality Concerns in the Age of COVID-19**
The survey found that a growing number of Americans are more worried about the quality of their tap water than before, especially after spending more time at home over the past year. Out of 2,413 American adults surveyed, 73% said they were at least somewhat concerned about the quality of unfiltered tap water in their homes. Additionally, 36% reported that their concerns increased during the pandemic.
When it comes to specific contaminants, there's been a noticeable shift in what people are most worried about. The percentage of Americans naming cysts, bacteria, and viruses as their top concern jumped by 26%. These threats now outweigh concerns about other harmful substances like pesticides, herbicides, and lead. Moreover, awareness of "forever chemicals" (PFOS and PFOA) has nearly doubled since 2019, showing a growing public interest in understanding long-term water safety.
**What You Need to Know About Your Drinking Water and COVID-19**
So why has the pandemic led to such a change in how people think about their water? One reason is that with more people staying home, tap water has become a bigger part of daily life. As we use it more, our attention naturally turns to its quality.
Many people have asked the EPA whether tap water is still safe during the pandemic. According to the agency, it's still safe to drink tap water as usual. The World Health Organization also confirms that no evidence suggests the virus is present in drinking water supplies, and the risk remains low. However, the survey shows that public perception has changed, and many are now more cautious.
In our previous article, "Coronavirus and Drinking Water: What You Need to Know," we highlighted three important points: tap water is still safe, municipal treatment plants are taking extra precautions, and it’s wise to disinfect faucets and avoid public fountains.
