In 2003, Chongqing Municipality took a significant step toward strengthening its auto and motorcycle parts industry by integrating over 1,000 local enterprises. The goal was to focus on supporting 388 key companies that had a production value of more than 5 million yuan each. These companies were encouraged to grow larger, stronger, and more specialized, aligning with the rapid development of Chongqing's automotive and motorcycle sectors. As a result, many of them became global suppliers, contributing significantly to the region's economic growth.
At the time, the automobile and motorcycle industry was already one of the most vital pillars of Chongqing's economy. A well-established industrial chain had developed around this sector, with annual output exceeding 20 billion yuan. To further boost the industry, the municipal government aimed to support leading enterprises and create favorable conditions for smaller firms to optimize their supply chains through joint ventures and strategic partnerships.
By leveraging fiscal incentives, tax policies, and industrial strategies, the government sought to attract advanced parts manufacturers to collaborate with local leaders in the automotive and motorcycle sectors. This move aimed to enhance the competitiveness of Chongqing’s industry on a global scale.
The first phase of the integration focused on transforming competitive component manufacturers into national-level suppliers. The plan also involved building internationally competitive auto and motorcycle brands by capitalizing on global procurement networks and improving core competencies.
According to projections at the time, by 2010, the total output value of Chongqing’s auto and motorcycle parts industry was expected to reach 100 billion yuan. This ambitious target reflected the city’s growing influence in the global automotive supply chain and its commitment to becoming a major player in the industry.
