The color of fire trucks – Harvard/Tonica
Readers have shared their thoughts on our recent post about the non-red apparatus in MABAS Division 5, specifically mentioning a new chapter for the 1977 Ford/Welch rescue squad from Harvard. One reader provided an interesting history of the truck.
"The Harvard Rescue truck was acquired by the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department in the late '80s and underwent a full restoration. It was then painted in a striking Chrome Yellow and White scheme. Later, Tonica sold it to a chemical plant in Henry, Illinois, which used it as part of their hazmat unit. I was one of the firefighters from Tonica who went to Marengo to pick up the truck when we first bought it. Tonica is a not-for-profit organization that relies entirely on donations and grants—no tax money at all."
Here’s a photo of the truck as it was when it arrived in Tonica. Bill Friedrich captured the moment, and he shared his thoughts:
"Here's the rig when it came to Tonica. We're always on the lookout for old friends, as we like to say. We travel quite a bit to find them. Tonica is located in the southern tip of LaSalle County."
This image shows the same 1977 Ford/Welch unit in action with the Tonica Fire Rescue. The truck originally belonged to the Harvard Rescue Squad in McHenry County, but now it has found a new home in LaSalle County.
Bill Friedrich’s photos give a nice glimpse into the truck’s journey and the dedication of the volunteer firefighters who keep these classic rigs alive. It's always fascinating to see how these vehicles continue to serve long after they've left their original departments.
