New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD
Bill Friedrich has shared some interesting news: the Newport Fire Protection District in Lake County has acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury walk-in heavy rescue truck, equipped with a mid-ship mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. This unit was previously operated by the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. While the apparatus hasn't arrived in Illinois yet, it's expected to be there soon. The Lutherville rig was originally painted in a white base with gold stripes and a black lower band, giving it a distinctive look that stood out in the community.
This particular unit served as Squad 303 for many years before being replaced in 2008. At that time, Lutherville upgraded to a new Pierce Velocity heavy rescue, also a tandem-axle, walk-around model, but this time with a more powerful 10-ton National Crane. The older Mack was retired after serving the department faithfully for over two decades.
Photos from Larry Shapiro show the Mack in action, highlighting its crane capabilities during extrication operations. The images also capture the original setup of the unit, providing a visual record of how it was used in the field. Meanwhile, the newer Pierce is still in service today, continuing the legacy of Squad 303 with modern equipment and technology.
It’s always fascinating to see how fire departments evolve over time, upgrading their tools and resources to better serve their communities. This transition from the 1985 Mack to the 2008 Pierce is a great example of that ongoing progress.
