Chicago Fireboat update

Dan McInerney from the Oak Park and Countryside Fire Departments shared a link to the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) website, which highlights recent updates about the department’s new fireboat.

The following details were taken from the official CFD website:

The Chicago Fire Department is acquiring a brand-new NFPA Type III fireboat to replace its 60-year-old vessel, the *Victor L. Schlaeger*. This modern fireboat will be designed and built to operate year-round in Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, and surrounding harbors. It will support firefighting operations, emergency rescue missions, and response to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents. Additionally, it will be equipped for hazmat decontamination, underwater diving operations, and other water-based emergencies.
Construction Progress (6/11/2010)
As of June 11, 2010, construction on the Chicago Fireboat is progressing as planned. Most of the hull structure has been assembled, and the hull plating is now in place. Meanwhile, the Aluminum deckhouse is being constructed in parallel with the hull.
Construction Progress (3/1/2010)
Construction officially began in February 2010. The steel sections for the hull have already arrived at the shipyard, and the structural framework is currently under assembly.
Contract Award (8/3/2009)
On August 3, 2009, the City of Chicago awarded a contract to Hike Metal Products for the design and construction of an NFPA Type III fireboat. Work started in 2010, with delivery expected by 2011.
