New apparatus for Glenview
As I mentioned before in my earlier posts [here](link) and [here](link), the Glenview Fire Department recently welcomed a brand-new quint truck into service for Truck 14. The department's website has already been updated with photos of the new vehicle, but it won't officially go into service until June. For those who are curious, here are some additional images of the shiny new Truck 14, along with a side-by-side comparison shot featuring its predecessor, which will soon be designated as Truck 14R/Truck 29.
The new truck is truly impressive! It’s a 2013 Pierce Arrow XT 1500/450/10/40 with a 105-foot rear-mounted ladder, and it looks absolutely stunning in these photos taken by Larry Shapiro. You can really see how sleek and modern the design is compared to its predecessor.
On another note, the Village of Northfield made a significant contribution of $100,000 toward the acquisition of this new truck. As part of the agreement, Truck 14R will now be stationed at Northfield’s Station 29, where it will operate as Truck 29 during calls requiring Northfield to send out a truck outside the immediate area. In return, Glenview will handle responses to alarms or fires within Northfield. If Glenview’s primary Truck 14 ever needs maintenance or is unavailable for any reason, the older Truck 14R will return to Glenview as Truck 14.
There are several noticeable differences between the new truck and its predecessor. First off, the wheelbase has been slightly extended due to the addition of an elongated pump panel that now includes a Smart Power 10-KW generator and a XRT power system for the Hurst hydraulic tools. This change not only enhances functionality but also gives the truck a more robust appearance.
Another key difference is the extended front bumper, which now features a Hurst high-pressure cutter and spreader with 100-foot reels of hydraulic hose. These tools are mounted directly onto the bumper, making them easily accessible during emergencies. Additionally, the new truck boasts all-LED lighting, a small tool compartment located behind the cab, and decals bearing Northfield’s name on the signboard—a nice touch that reflects the collaborative effort between the two fire departments.
One major upgrade is the switch from the older Pierce Dash cab and chassis to the newer Arrow XT model. The Arrow XT cab offers improved ergonomics and comfort for the crew, while maintaining the same level of durability and reliability that we’ve come to expect from Pierce. Another notable feature is the shorter barrier clearance doors, which provide better maneuverability in tight spaces.
In other news, Glenview recently added a brand-new ambulance to Station 6. This 2013 Type I Medtec is built on an IHC 4300 chassis, similar to the rest of the department’s fleet. What sets this ambulance apart is its LED lighting system and a slightly altered paint scheme on the box, featuring a black border near the roof. This update distinguishes it visually from the previous models. The new ambulance replaces the older 2007 IHC/Medtec, which has now become the spare vehicle. Meanwhile, the previous spare, a 2001 Freightliner FL60/Road Rescue, has been decommissioned.
Here’s a quick look at the new Ambulance 6, complete with its distinctive chevron striping. The design of this ambulance mirrors the all-red bodywork seen across the rest of Glenview’s fleet. Photos courtesy of Larry Shapiro once again capture the essence of this modernized emergency vehicle.
Overall, these updates reflect Glenview’s commitment to upgrading their fleet with state-of-the-art equipment while fostering collaboration with neighboring communities like Northfield. It’s exciting to see how these changes will enhance response times and overall efficiency for both departments.
