MABAS, ILTF-1, & Air One at NIPSTA
President of the Cook County Board paid a visit to NIPSTA today, where he got a close look at some of the regional assets that have been partially or fully funded by the county. Among the impressive displays were several MABAS specialty units, including the ILTF-1 team, which kicked off a multi-day training exercise. Air One also had four helicopters on-site, while ongoing fire training classes were taking place within the facility.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present at the event and shared several photos capturing the day’s highlights.
One of the standout moments included a demonstration by police officers assigned to Air One, showcasing their tactical positioning on one of the helicopters. Another unforgettable scene was the Cook County Board President being guided through the MABAS, ILTF-1, and Air One assets by various department heads. The ILTF-1 mobile units stood out for their ability to transport essential equipment packed in durable metal storage containers.
Also on display was a MABAS Support Unit offering a mobile office solution, as well as an ILTF-1 flatbed lumber truck, highlighting the versatility of these emergency response resources. A DOT-owned Huey helicopter, part of the Air One fleet, caught everyone's attention, along with another ex-Marine Corps helicopter also integrated into the Air One setup.
From the vantage point of one of the helicopters, attendees enjoyed a breathtaking view of Glenview stretching towards Chicago. There was also a fascinating look at the railroad repairs following the July 4th train derailment at Shermer Road.
Larry Shapiro captured additional details, such as the MABAS Support Services Unit with its expandable slide-out sides, creating more interior workspace. The ILTF-1 communication equipment, complete with satellite capabilities, further underscored the sophistication of these resources. Part of the MABAS tent city was also visible, adding to the scale and readiness of the emergency operations.
