It's early Sunday morning, around 6 AM, when Battalion 22 responds to a fire alarm at 618 East 104th Street. According to Eric Haak, who sent over these photos, the flames were initially confined to the basement of the building. The situation seemed under control rather quickly, which is good news considering the sub-zero temperatures that morning.
Fast forward a few hours, and things take a turn for the worse. Just after 11 AM, Engine 93 arrives to find a much more serious fire at the same location. By the time they arrived, the flames had already spread to the roof, making it a far more challenging situation. It must have been incredibly tough for the firefighters to work in such frigid conditions, with temperatures hovering just above freezing.
I’ve included some of Eric’s photos here so you can see the intensity of the situation. There are images of firefighters entering the building, battling the blaze from within. You’ll also notice shots of the roof being ventilated—a critical step in controlling fires like this one. One particularly striking image shows a firefighter wielding what looks like a hoe while working on the roof, adding an interesting touch to the chaos.
It’s moments like these that remind us how dangerous and unpredictable fires can be. Even when the initial report suggests the fire might be contained, situations can escalate rapidly.
