Join us on-site with Jack Kessler as he takes us through an interesting coil setup at a middle school in New York City. This particular project required a creative approach, and the solution involved mounting steam coils vertically while directing airflow horizontally.
This unique configuration was essential to manage condensate buildup, which can be a serious issue if not handled properly. When steam condenses into liquid, it needs to exit the system—otherwise, it can freeze and cause damage. In fact, frozen water expands, and that expansion can lead to ruptured coils, which is something we definitely want to avoid.
At John S. Roberts J.H.S., the engineers had to ensure that condensate could drain efficiently. One of the key elements in this design was pitching the return header downward. This allowed gravity to assist in draining the condensate, preventing any buildup that could lead to freezing or blockage.
Looking at the system, you can see that the condensate connections are located at the bottom. The two coils are placed side by side and angled slightly downward, which makes it easier for the liquid to flow out naturally. The unit’s casing also wraps around these coils, giving it a compact and efficient look.
On the top side, where the steam supply connects, the layout is more straightforward. However, even with full steam pressure, it's still important to have the proper slope to ensure condensate drains smoothly. If the system runs at less than full load, the pitched header becomes even more critical in maintaining performance and preventing issues.
