Join Jack Kessler, our very own HVAC expert, as he walks us through an unusual coil setup at a middle school in New York City… Not every project follows the standard blueprint. At John S. Roberts J.H.S., we encountered a unique challenge that required a creative solution. The steam coils were installed vertically, but with a horizontal airflow—something you don’t see every day. This setup was specifically designed to manage condensate buildup. Once steam condenses into liquid, it needs to exit the system. If it’s left to sit, it can freeze and expand, potentially causing the coils to rupture. That’s not something we want to happen on a school campus. To prevent this, the return header was pitched downward. This allows gravity to assist in draining the condensate, ensuring the system runs smoothly even when the pressure isn't at its peak. It's a small detail, but one that makes a big difference in performance and longevity. While full steam pressure can often push out condensate on its own, systems running at lower loads or pressures need that extra help from the pitched header. It’s a smart design choice that ensures reliability and efficiency over time.
