Excerpts from Kenoshanews.com: At 100 feet high, Fire Chief Doug McElmury and the Pleasant Prairie firefighters are putting the village’s brand-new aerial fire truck through its paces. The $1.1 million state-of-the-art ladder truck marks a major upgrade from the previous model, which is now being sold after serving the department for 29 years. The truck made an appearance at the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services Association Conference in January and took two years to be custom-built. It was approved as part of the village’s regular equipment replacement plan. With its advanced features, it's designed to meet the needs of both industrial and residential areas. McElmury highlighted the nearby industrial park, home to companies like Emco Chemical and Rustoleum, but also noted the presence of multi-story senior housing and apartment complexes. This makes the new tower ladder especially valuable for rescues in such settings. One of the standout features is the remote-controlled master stream system. Firefighters can adjust the water flow, including oscillation, from a safe distance. Whether using a fog stream for flammable liquids or a smooth bore to penetrate structures, the system offers flexibility and safety. "We can back up about a quarter mile and still operate the stream remotely," McElmury explained. "Once the water is flowing, we can move to a safer location and continue the operation." The entire unit weighs around 78,000 pounds and measures 47 feet long by 11 feet tall. It also doubles as a light tower with LED lighting, and includes thermal imaging capabilities for better visibility during fires. This helps firefighters identify hot spots and monitor conditions more effectively. The fire department’s pump operators will be responsible for running the truck. All three shifts completed factory training over the weekend, and in-house training will continue for the next four to five weeks. McElmury said the public won’t see the new rig on active calls until April. "This is one of the most complex pieces of equipment most departments own," he said. "The ladder is the obvious feature, but what we really have here is a rolling toolbox — packed with tools and technology to handle a wide range of emergencies."
