Maywood Box Alarm 2-19-12
The Maywood Fire Department responded to a serious fire early Sunday morning in a vacant three-story building located at 907 S. 3rd Ave. Upon arrival, crews quickly recognized the severity of the situation and initiated a Box Alarm due to heavy fire conditions in the attic and on the top floor. Both Maywood and Melrose Park fire units were dispatched and worked together to contain the blaze.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several powerful images that vividly depict the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters. His photos show the dedication and professionalism of the emergency responders as they worked under challenging conditions.
One image features a Melrose Park lieutenant assessing the rear of the building before deploying their aerial ladder. Another shows the Melrose Park quint making its way to the scene, ready for action. Firefighters from both departments could be seen inspecting upper floors after removing plywood from windows, while others worked from the tip of their aerials, applying water directly to the flames.
As the fire spread through the roof, with embers and smoke pouring from upper-floor windows, the crews remained focused and determined. A photo captures the moment when the Melrose Park unit deployed their master stream, while another shows both departments working in unison from the roof.
Additional shots highlight the physical demands of the job, including a Maywood firefighter using a pike pole to open up a larger area and another struggling against the heat as flames burst over his head from the aerial. These images not only showcase the danger involved but also the bravery of those on the front lines.
