Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11
The Long Grove Fire Department was called to a house fire on Checker Road this morning at 1889. The structure, which had been vacant, had served as a training site for the past two weeks. During that time, eight other fire departments participated in daily interior firefighting exercises. Training concluded yesterday, and the house was set to be demolished by the developer this Saturday—weather permitting—with local residents expected to witness the controlled burn.
However, this morning’s call came with a twist. A neighbor initially thought the department might still be conducting training, causing a 20-minute delay before she alerted the fire department. Once the alarm was raised, Long Grove responded fully, including Tanker 55, as there are no hydrants nearby. Upon arrival, firefighters found a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had ignited.
Firefighters quickly deployed five lines, with Tanker 55 supplying 3,000 gallons of water. The garage was already down, and the pallet storage area was heavily involved. As the fire spread, engines from Buffalo Grove, Palatine, and an ambulance from Arlington Heights arrived to assist. Prospect Heights and Fox Lake also sent tankers to help prevent total structural loss.
Despite the challenges, much of the house was saved and will be burned later this week. Firefighters used foam to cool smoldering areas and ensure the fire didn’t reignite. The scene was chaotic but well-managed, with multiple units working in coordination.
Local photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the event, documenting the intense efforts of the crews. Images show firefighters battling the blaze from both inside and outside, using hand lines and large-diameter hoses. The location posed logistical difficulties, with the house half a mile into the property and a gravel driveway requiring careful positioning of rigs.
In addition to the fire incident, the article also highlights the recent live-fire training sessions conducted at the same site. Over the past two weeks, departments from Wheeling, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove, and Barrington took part in intensive drills involving interior fires, victim searches, and water supply operations. These exercises helped prepare crews for real emergencies.
