Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11
The Long Grove Fire Department was called to a house fire on Checker Road at 1889 this morning. The home, which had been vacant for some time, had recently served as a training site for the department and seven other local fire agencies over the past two weeks. Each day, multiple interior fire scenarios were conducted as part of the intensive training program. The final session concluded yesterday, and the building was set to be demolished by the developer this Saturday in front of local residents.
However, this morning’s incident was not part of the planned training. A neighbor, thinking that the fire department might still be conducting drills, delayed calling emergency services for about 20 minutes. Once it became clear that the fire was real and unattended, she alerted the authorities. The Long Grove Fire Department responded with their full crew, including Tanker 55, as there are no hydrants nearby. Upon arrival, firefighters found a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had ignited.
The scene was chaotic, with the garage already down and the pallet storage fully involved in flames. Squad 55 was on the scene quickly, supplying five lines of water, while Tanker 55 provided 3,000 gallons of water. Additional support came from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake, as well as engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine, and an ambulance from Arlington Heights for medical support. Despite the intensity, much of the structure was saved, and the plan to demolish the house remains in place for Saturday.
Firefighters worked aggressively, using a 2.5-inch line to tackle the heaviest parts of the fire. Smoke was visible from the second-floor section as crews made an interior attack. Prospect Heights Tanker 9 arrived with another 3,000 gallons, helping to sustain operations when the Long Grove tank ran low. Foam was later used to control smoldering areas, preserving water resources.
Photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the entire event, documenting the efforts of the crews and the aftermath. The house, located half a mile into the property with a gravel driveway, posed logistical challenges for the responding units. The Fox Lake tanker had to make two trips to refill its tank, showing the complexity of the operation.
Despite the damage, the majority of the house remains intact, with plans to burn it down on Saturday. These images show the intensity of the multi-day training, with departments from Wheeling, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove, and Barrington all participating.
