From football to fireman

CBS Sports recently featured an article about an NFL player deciding to retire from professional football and join the Chicago Fire Department's academy. The piece highlights the journey of safety Tom Zbikowski, whose time in the NFL came to an abrupt end this past August when he was released by the Bears. After five seasons that were described as inconsistent, Zbikowski has chosen to step away from the sport he once loved. In a candid interview with the Chicago Tribune’s David Haugh, Zbikowski admitted that his passion for football had faded over time. "No, not really," he confessed. "It hasn’t been for a while. Football just got old to me." He explained how his early years in the league, particularly his first two seasons, were invigorating due to the competitive nature of playing against the best. However, as time went on, winning or losing didn’t seem to matter anymore because he was still guaranteed a paycheck. "I enjoyed high school and college much more," he added. Zbikowski spent the majority of his NFL career in Baltimore, where he played for four seasons. It was during his stint with the Colts in 2012 that things took a turn for the worse. That year proved to be particularly challenging, leading Zbikowski to cope with heavy drinking. Known for his boxing prowess, Zbikowski once joked that he could handle six beers followed by ten rounds of sparring in a single day. His reliance on alcohol became so severe that he even turned to drinking the night before games, treating it almost like a superstition. According to Haugh, out of the 64 games Zbikowski played in, he estimates that at least 12 were played under the influence of a significant hangover. Despite his struggles, Zbikowski found solace in the belief that his best performances often occurred after heavy drinking sessions. "Get a little messed up, sneak a girl into your room, feel on top of the world," he recalled. "I had some of my best games off of benders—some of my worst too. My two best seasons ever were 2005 (at Notre Dame) and 2009 (in Baltimore), when I was the most out of control drinking, so I thought, hey, maybe I should go back to that." The excessive drinking eventually caught up with him physically, causing him to gain weight. In an attempt to shed pounds, Zbikowski resorted to taking diuretics, which unfortunately violated NFL regulations. As a result, he faced a four-game suspension, possibly influencing the Bears' decision to release him. Now clean and sober, Zbikowski claims he no longer indulges in binge drinking or depends on painkillers. Instead, he looks forward to beginning his training with the Chicago Fire Department academy next month. Reflecting on his life, Zbikowski expressed gratitude for having saved most of his earnings, allowing him the freedom to pursue new opportunities. "I’ve had an extremely blessed life and I can do whatever I want," he stated. "And I want to be of service to a community." With aspirations to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both firefighters, Zbikowski sees firefighting as another way to embrace danger and contribute positively to society. "Firemen show up in scary situations," he noted. "They're symbols of pride, of faith, of what’s good in society. I like to live dangerously." This transition marks not just a change in career but also a shift toward a healthier lifestyle and a deeper commitment to serving others. Thanks for sharing, Dan!
