Chicago EMS Plan II on I90/94 2-15-15

On February 15, 2015, a major multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago, specifically in the express lanes near North Avenue. The incident, part of what was referred to as the "EMS Plan II," involved nearly 40 vehicles and caused significant traffic disruption. According to reports, there were 59 medical refusals and 12 patients transported to local hospitals. Tim Olk captured several striking images from the scene, offering a firsthand look at the aftermath of the crash. These photos show the extent of the damage and the challenging conditions that contributed to the accident. The icy roadways, worsened by lake-effect snow, created dangerous driving conditions, especially near Lake Michigan. The Chicago Tribune reported that the heavy snowfall, which lasted until mid-afternoon, led to slippery roads and multiple accidents. One of the most severe incidents occurred on the inbound express lanes of the Kennedy Expressway, where between 20 and 30 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash. The crash closed the expressway temporarily, stretching from North Avenue to the Ohio Street off-ramp. Officials from the Illinois State Police confirmed the incident was reported around 10 a.m., with the highway reopening by 11 a.m. Police attributed the crash to the hazardous weather conditions, noting that the lack of shoulders on the express lanes made it difficult for drivers to avoid collisions. As crews worked to clear the area, commuters faced delays and frustration, highlighting the impact of extreme weather on daily life in the city. These images from Tim Olk provide a powerful visual record of the event, capturing both the chaos and the resilience of those affected.
