The "Diesel Age" of automotive engines is ready

The shortage of energy and the deterioration of the environment caused by environmental degradation are becoming more and more severe. Just like the “squeezing spell” on the head of today’s auto industry, the development of the engine of the heart of the automobile is directly related to the improvement of the grim situation in these two areas. This situation leads the progress of the engine industry and determines the direction of development of the engine industry. It is against this background that diesel engines are gradually forming their own engine era.

Traditional fuel will still dominate

Petroleum resources have entered a period of scarcity and become a bottleneck for the development of the automotive industry. The search for alternative fuels is under such pressure and has gradually become the focus of the development of automobile industries in various countries in the coming years.

However, there are many problems with alternative energy sources. For hybrids that have already emerged in the market and have been heated up, its effectiveness in energy conservation depends on the use of the vehicles. If 25% of the total traffic is stopped and walked, it can save energy. 5% of the fuel, but if you are driving on the highway, the advantages of hybrid power will not be reflected; for the fuel cell, which is ideal from the perspective of energy conservation and environmental protection, is still a dream today, not only the cost It is expensive and there are many limiting factors, such as the source of large quantities of hydrogen and the associated emission factors caused by the production of hydrogen. Philip Gott, director of global automotive consulting services at Global Perspectives LLC, made an analysis at the Beijing 2006 Internal Combustion Engine Sustainable Development Forum and the Second China International Forum on Automotive Power Systems.

FAW, Chery, Daimler Chrysler, Scania, Mann, and other domestic and foreign automobile companies, Southwest Research Institute of the United States, AVL, FEV, Tsinghua University, National Key Laboratory of Automotive Safety and Energy, and other domestic and foreign engine research organizations, gathered together At the forum, traditional fuels will continue to occupy the dominant position of automotive fuels for a long time to become the consensus of participants.

Advanced diesel engine technology is respected

In traditional fuels, the use of advanced diesel technology is now highly respected. The increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions has caused the global climate warming effect to increase, and the use of diesel has become one of the major solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the face of environmental pressure, more and more countries in the world have begun to develop diesel vehicles. In Europe, the proportion of diesel vehicles is currently nearly 50%, and the use of the United States is gradually increasing. The biggest problem faced by advanced diesel technology is particulate emissions. How to control particulate emissions has become the focus of advanced diesel research and development.

Exhaust gas re-emission system (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with diesel particulate filters are currently the most commonly used two solutions. In the forum, experts from various countries not only brought forth the latest research results in this area, but also put forward their own suggestions on the situation in China. Experts who support the use of EGR systems believe that although the EGR system has high requirements for the low sulphur content of oil products, this system is one-step, even if it faces future Euro V or even higher emission standards. It is a good foundation and there is no need for additional gas filling facilities. Daimler Chrysler’s experts did not think so. They suggested that China adopt SCR technology. Although it is necessary to establish gas filling facilities to control particulate emissions, this system does not require low sulfur content of oil products. It can be used in China. Marketization of ultra-low sulfur fuels will gain more time.

Euro III diesel engine fully unveiled

The arguments in the international forums met and the experts' speeches almost all related to the use of diesel. At the following 7th China International Combustion Engine and Components Exhibition, the diesel engine was even more dominant.

The major engine manufacturers in the country all arrived at the scene and the full range of Euro III diesel engines became the main force of the show. Heavy-duty trucks, passenger cars and special vehicles and other supporting power fields, high-voltage electric control common rail technology has gradually become the mainstream. Weichai brought its own R&D team to reach Euro III emission levels and has the Euro IV potential. The company has won the Asian Bus Annual Award BAAV 2006 “Best Engine Maker”.

The Yu Wei of the award, a series of products attacked in full; Xichai also exhibited a full range of Euro III products, which not only achieved the transition from traditional technology to electronic technology control, but also completed the change from 2-valve to 4-valve for the future. IV, European V products lay the foundation. However, Qian Hengrong, the deputy general manager of Xichai, also stated that currently in the market, it is still dominated by Euro II products. Before the full implementation of the Euro III standard in the country, the market share of Euro III products will not be large.

In this exhibition, the display of passenger car diesel engines has become a bigger highlight. Yuchai brought YC4W, a diesel engine for the light passenger vehicle market, which has been successfully equipped with independent intellectual property rights and meets Euro III emission standards; Yunnei Power showcased environmentally friendly and energy-saving cars with independent intellectual property rights that went offline last year. Diesel engine --- D16TCI, D19TCI high pressure common rail dual overhead cam four-valve turbocharged electronically controlled diesel engine; Zhachai's "Shangye Fengying" series was positioned as the first domestic diesel engine designed for off-road vehicles. The Chaochao QD32Tic engine under the supercharged intercooled technology platform has changed from a commercial vehicle to a passenger vehicle. Faced with the general trend of dieselization of passenger cars, diesel engine manufacturers have demonstrated their capabilities and are fully prepared. They hope to firmly grasp this new market growth point.

Drive the development of the entire industry chain

The demand for advanced diesel engines continues to increase, driving the development of the entire industrial chain, and suppliers of injectors, electronic control systems, turbochargers and many other important components have come one after another. Taking turbocharging as an example, Zhou Huolin, general manager of turbocharger and emission system of BorgWarner Automotive Components (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. explained that the main role of turbocharging is to increase power and improve emissions. Faced with the crisis of energy shortage and the pressure of environmental protection, as well as the advent of the dieselization era of cars, the use of turbochargers will make it easier to achieve the goal of improving engine combustion efficiency and environmental protection.

The enthusiasm of the parts suppliers can be clearly felt in the exhibition. Bosch, Denso, BorgWarner etc. occupy a large area in the international exhibition business area. Shen Hui, president of BorgWarner China, said that in the past two years, China has begun to integrate more internationally and began to adopt more and more advanced international technologies, which has prompted BorgWarner to fully enter the Chinese market last year. He said that BorgWarner's business development in China will rely mainly on self-owned brands. Currently, there are many cooperations with Chery, Geely, SAIC, and SAIC.

In the field of commercial vehicles, diesel engines are faced with how to create more advanced and environmentally friendly products. In the area of passenger vehicles, the demand for diesel is increasing. The diesel engine, the old engine product that once lumped together with “black smoke” and “poor quality”, is undergoing qualitative changes and is seeking its reasonable position in the development of the automotive industry.
