Multiple fatalities at Glenview crash 10-15-13
Glenview police and fire departments were dispatched early this afternoon following a serious collision involving a garbage truck and an SUV at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street. The garbage truck, operated by the Village of Skokie, was fully loaded when it struck the SUV, which reportedly crossed into its path. As the truck, equipped with a large front plow, pushed the vehicle along the roadway, the SUV flipped over and landed on its roof. The truck came to rest on top of the car, and a fire broke out involving both the truck's cab and the SUV.
Three people were trapped inside the car and tragically lost their lives. The truck driver managed to escape on his own and appeared to be unharmed. Glenview Engine 6 arrived quickly and used a deck gun to begin extinguishing the flames, followed by a hand line to fully put out the fire and apply a layer of foam for safety.
An area resident attempted to help using a fire extinguisher but was forced back due to the intense heat. Tray Cashman, a local resident, captured footage of Engine 6 arriving at the scene and fighting the fire.
