Here's an excerpt from Kenoshanews.com:

A long-standing volunteer medical and rescue organization in the area is facing serious financial challenges. The Kenosha County Scout Leaders Rescue Squad, which has been serving the community for almost 80 years, is currently operating at a deficit due to rising costs of equipment, maintenance, and insurance.

The group consists of about 15 members divided into two units: Emergency Medical Technicians and Underwater Search and Rescue. They provide contract emergency management services for events at $85 per hour and also offer backup medical support and mutual aid across Kenosha and neighboring counties. They are often among the first responders during water-related emergencies.

Funds from their contract work go toward vehicle maintenance, fuel, medications, liability insurance, and workers’ compensation. The organization has faced similar financial difficulties before—most notably in 2009, when the community rallied to help them stay afloat.

In 2005, they suffered a devastating fire that destroyed three vehicles and a 16-foot rescue boat, causing over $178,000 in equipment losses and another $150,000 in building damage.

According to a 1947 article in the Milwaukee Journal, the Scout Leaders were founded by Howard Gatley, an executive with the Kenosha Boy Scouts Council, after a tragic train accident in 1930 that killed 14 and injured 100. The incident involved a car hitting a passenger train, which then collided with an oncoming freight train on the North Shore electric lines.

Over time, the organization transitioned from being affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America and the Red Cross to becoming an independent nonprofit service provider.

Every year, Scout Leaders host a spring concert fundraiser. This year’s event will be announced soon in terms of date and location.

To support the cause, they’ve also launched a GoFundMe campaign. You can visit GoFundMe.com and search for “Kenosha County Scout Leaders Rescue” to make a donation.
