How Winter Weather Affects Your Car

While driving in snow and ice can be dangerous, leaving your car sitting in the driveway all winter isn't much better. Cold weather can cause damage to your vehicle in several ways, from hardened tires to thickened fluids and weakened batteries. Here's what you need to know to keep your car in top shape this season. **Tires** When temperatures drop below 44°F, your all-season tires start to harden, reducing their grip on icy or snowy roads. This loss of traction can make driving more risky. Additionally, tire pressure decreases by about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature. If you don’t check your tire pressure regularly, under-inflated tires can lead to uneven wear, blowouts, or even loss of control on slippery surfaces. **Fluids** Cold weather thickens motor oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze, making it harder for them to circulate properly. To avoid damage, let your car warm up for 10–15 minutes before driving. This helps thin out the fluids and protects internal components. At the start of winter, check all fluid levels and top them off if needed. Consider using a thinner oil grade or adding an engine block heater for easier starts. Also, use only pure antifreeze, not water, to prevent freezing and potential cracks in your engine. **Engine** It might be tempting to turn on the heater right after starting your car, but doing so can actually slow down the warming process. Wait at least 20 minutes before using the heater to allow the engine to reach optimal operating temperature. This helps reduce fuel consumption and improves performance. **Windshields and Wipers** Avoid pouring hot water on a frozen windshield, as it can cause the glass to crack. Instead, use an alcohol-based de-icer or an ice scraper. High defroster settings can also damage the windshield over time. For wipers, cold weather can freeze the rubber to the glass, potentially damaging both. Tilt them away from the windshield or remove them during heavy snowstorms. **Battery** Cold weather reduces battery voltage, making it harder to start your car. Car batteries work best between 30°F and 90°F, and older batteries (three years or more) are especially vulnerable. Have your battery tested at the start of winter, and replace it if necessary. Storing your car in a garage or climate-controlled space can help maintain battery performance. **Leaks** Thickened fluids can damage seals, leading to leaks. But another issue is condensation that turns into ice inside the power steering, brake, and transmission systems. This can create blockages and damage components. Flush old fluids at the start of the season to remove any moisture. **Corrosion** Road salt and moisture can cause rust, especially on the undercarriage, wheel wells, and brakes. Tert-butyl Hydroperoxide

Tert-butyl Hydroperoxideis a hydroperoxide, in fact one of the most widely used in a variety of oxidation processes, for example the Halcon process.It is normally supplied as a 69–70% aqueous solution. Compared to hydrogen peroxide and organic peracids, tert-butyl hydroperoxide is less reactive and more soluble in organic solvents.
