Invasive species carried in ship ballast water have emerged as one of the most serious threats to marine ecosystems worldwide. At the "2007 China International Maritime Technology Exhibition" held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, PureBallast, an innovative and chemical-free system designed to eliminate harmful organisms in ballast water, was officially introduced to the Chinese market. This technology is set to be implemented next year, marking a significant step forward in protecting the ocean from biological invasions.
Developed by a leading research company, the system employs advanced oxidation technology that uses light to generate free radicals. These radicals effectively break down microbial cell membranes without the need for chemicals or leaving behind any toxic residues. This makes it not only efficient but also environmentally safe, aligning with global sustainability goals.
The technology is expected to complete its final feasibility tests in March next year and will likely become the first fully recognized ballast water treatment system by the International Maritime Organization. This recognition could pave the way for broader adoption across the shipping industry.
In the first half of this year alone, China’s shipbuilding sector achieved remarkable growth, with 7.55 million deadweight tons of ships completed—up 43% compared to the same period last year. New ship orders reached 42.62 million DWT, a 165% increase year-on-year. For the first time, the country's active ship orders surpassed 100 million tons, rising by 107% compared to the previous year. With these numbers, China continues to solidify its position as the second-largest shipbuilding nation in the world, trailing only South Korea.
