Autodesk Previews Urban Canvas at American Planning Association Conference

Autodesk is set to transform the regional and local planning market with a specialized solution tailored for urban planners. At the recent American Planning Association’s 2015 National Conference in Seattle, Autodesk made a strong presence by showcasing its new software, Autodesk Urban Canvas, in a collaborative "Tech Zone" co-hosted with Parsons Brinckerhoff. Today, Autodesk officially announced the launch of Urban Canvas, a groundbreaking platform designed to help planners design, analyze, and collaborate more effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Built on the acquired Synthicity technology, this tool offers a unified environment for urban planning workflows that were previously unavailable in the market. From editing and sharing data on parcels, buildings, and zoning to rapidly designing and communicating alternative scenarios, Urban Canvas provides a dynamic, visual platform for all stages of urban development. The release of Urban Canvas follows Autodesk's acquisition of Synthicity, a California-based software company. Although the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the integration of Synthicity’s technology marks a major step forward in Autodesk’s commitment to supporting sustainable and efficient urban planning. Currently, urban planners often rely on a mix of GIS tools, databases, spreadsheets, and design software to gather and manage data. Urban Canvas streamlines this process by offering a centralized platform that integrates these tasks into one cohesive system, improving efficiency and collaboration across teams. "Urban planning plays a vital role in shaping cities that are livable, inclusive, and sustainable," said Paul Waddell, Professor and Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley and an Autodesk consultant. "With Urban Canvas, we’re providing planners with the tools they need to create better designs and make more informed decisions." Scott Noble, Industry Strategy Manager at Autodesk, added, "Urban Canvas, combined with our expanding capabilities in InfraWorks 360 and our partnership with Impact Infrastructure, reflects Autodesk’s ongoing dedication to enabling sustainable design through innovative technology." Autodesk Urban Canvas allows planners to: - Collaboratively edit and share built-environment data in the cloud - Develop and evaluate different planning scenarios and project phases - Track the progress of development projects - Quickly generate 3D models of proposed developments, their local context, and entire metropolitan areas - Visualize and analyze planning alternatives in real time The software also enables users to visualize data in 3D across various geographic scales, helping them convey critical information at the right moment. Whether it's analyzing proposals as they're designed or visualizing plans in context, Urban Canvas enhances the decision-making process for planners. Autodesk Urban Canvas is now available in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. as a Desktop Subscription, either annually or quarterly.
