Background

Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through sorting, crushing, washing, and drying processes. This makes it possible to produce recycled PET flakes in any area where beverages are consumed. China is one of the main markets for imported recycled PET flakes, with over 10–13 million tons of PET flakes being imported annually.

However, in 2017, environmental regulations in China became stricter, and the import of waste plastics, including recycled PET, was completely banned. As a result, recycled plastics can only be imported in the form of granules or chips. This has made it necessary for PET bottle flake recyclers to re-pelletize their materials to meet these new standards.

Processing Concerns

  • Avoid hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process of PET flakes;
  • Use a large displacement ventilating device to minimize IV value reduction;
  • Prevent or reduce yellowing during the re-pelletizing process;
  • Implement an automatic pelletizing method to reduce labor and ensure stable high output.

  • Adequate pre-drying time is essential before re-pelletizing. ACERETECH uses either venting-type compactors or lifting-type drying hoppers to remove moisture from the flakes, preventing PET hydrolysis during processing;

  • The system combines modular processing sections with efficient degassing structures from twin-screw extruders and an automatic three-stage Roots vacuum pump set. This ensures that the vacuum pressure reaches -0.1MPa, effectively removing volatiles from the PET melt and minimizing IV value reduction;

  • Optimized process steps and specialized design of the twin-screw extruder enable continuous and efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, avoiding yellowing caused by dead zones or local overheating;
  • The strands pelletizing unit is commonly used for PET pelletizing. The strands exiting the extruder die are manually guided into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife, cut by the pelletizer blades, and formed into granules/chips. This method requires more labor and skilled operation, suitable for capacities below 600kg/h;
  • For high-capacity PET pelletizing, the strands method is not ideal. An automatic underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high output and automation performance.
