Background

Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through sorting, crushing, washing, and drying processes. Therefore, recycled PET bottle flakes can be manufactured in any location where beverage consumption is common. As a major market for the import of recycled PET bottle flakes, more than 10 to 13 million tons of PET bottle flakes are imported into China every year.

In 2017, environmental regulations in China became stricter, and the import of waste plastics was completely banned. As part of waste plastics, recycled PET could no longer be imported in any form, such as bales or flakes. According to Chinese environmental regulations, recycled plastics must now be imported in the form of granules or chips. This makes it essential for PET bottle flake recyclers to re-pelletize the flakes.

Processing Concerns

  • Avoid hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process of PET bottle flakes;
  • Large displacement ventilation devices are required to minimize IV value reduction;

  • Adequate pre-drying time is necessary before the flakes enter the re-pelletizing stage. ACERETECH uses either a venting type compactor or a lifting type drying hopper to remove moisture from the flakes, preventing PET hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process;

  • Combining modular processing sections with a well-designed degassing structure from the twin-screw extruder and an automatic 3-level Roots-type vacuum pump set, the system ensures a vacuum pressure of up to -0.1MPa, effectively removing volatiles from PET melts and minimizing IV value reduction;

  • Optimized process steps and specialized design of the twin-screw extruder's processing section allow continuous and efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, preventing yellowing caused by dead zones or localized high temperatures;
  • The strands pelletizing unit is a typical PET pelletizing method. The strands exiting the extruder die are manually pulled into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife device, cut by the rotary blades of the pelletizer, and formed into granules/chips. This method requires more labor and skilled operation, suitable for PET flake re-pelletizing capacities below 600kg/h;
  • For high-capacity PET pelletizing jobs, the strands pelletizing method is not suitable. An automatic and reliable underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high output and automation performance.
